As suggested by the name itself, programs for absence management are being set in place in order to supposedly control absences that are due to injury or illness. The purpose here is to pinpoint and mitigate unplanned, unexplained or excessive absences. Some of these programs have the capability to cover a wide array of absenteeism reason, which is often called as ‘Total Absence Management.’ On the other hand, others also focus on the rapid response that serves best on the narrower reason of absences. This, in turn, is termed as ‘Day One Absence Management’.
Understanding the Terms
When talking about absence management, it is very
important to completely understand the nuances that are often related to these
types of initiatives within companies. One of the most common definitions that
you might encounter when dealing this field is ‘disability programs’. They
prove to be narrower in terms of scope compared to absence management. They use methods that can reduce the impact on the
cost of the disability, as well as offer methods that can promote recovery and
speedy return to work.
Productivity and
health management refer to the integration of data, management, and services
that are related to different aspects on the health of employees which can
possibly affect work performance and attendance. By far, this is the broadest
umbrella under these programs. On the other hand, behavioural risk integration
is used by several companies and employees as part of their entire absence management program in order to
specifically address psychosocial issues, which can complicate claims or
perhaps encourage absences.
In order to encourage
attendance and possibly reduce or eliminate absences, workplace wellness
programs are also set in place as part of the overall absence management program because the activities involved are
primarily designed in order to support improved health on all employees. The
activities included medical screenings, health education, weight management,
health fairs, health coaching, on-site fitness centres, newsletters, as well as
other health oriented and wellness programs.
The rate of absenteeism
is not just expensive for employers, but they can also be very impacting on the
overall productivity of the company. Because of this very important reason, a
lot of employers, as well as big organisations, are very proactive when it
comes to implementing their absence
management programs. This is quite similar to the increase in the adoption
of workplace wellness programs.
Yet, there are a lot
of employers who have not yet completely addressed challenges that are related
to absences. As a matter of fact, there are some employers who may not even
know specific conditions that cause these absences. Employers that fail to
address such issue are not able to manage it effectively. If the employers do
not understand the specific types of conditions that ultimately cause absences,
they may not be able to focus well on all their efforts in pinpointing the most
important reasons of absenteeism. In order to avoid all problems related to absenteeism,
the best solution is the implementation of absence
management programs.
